If you have a friend or family member currently imprisoned, the best option to stay in touch is through an inmate texting app. These apps are specifically designed to meet prison regulations and allow family members and friends to send and receive messages pictures, eCards, video calls, and even money into their trust accounts in prison. There are additional federal inmate apps that offer additional services such as video visits and phone calls.
The JPay application, for example, enables family and friends to easily pay money into an inmate's trust account, along with images, emails, eCards and video grams. It also lets them make personal postcards using photos of their own. It's a safer and more secure alternative to postal mail.
Another popular texting app for inmates is GettingOut that provides "simple and reliable communication" between inmates and their loved ones. The app is accessible at select correctional facilities and allows prisoners to upload pictures and message friends and family via their tablets. Inmates pay $0.25 per message and their loved ones pay the costs for accessing the data (but they are not explicit images). The GettingOut app allows you to upload a picture to Facebook or Foursquare and then check in to Foursquare and then add the option of a YouTube video.
